Keep Vari Hall the way it is!

The York University Administration has announced a proposal to renovate Vari Hall as per recommendations of the university’s Task Force on Student Life, Learning, and Community.

Such renovations will limit student activity and involvement on our campus which directly hinders students’ freedom of speech and right to public assembly.

The thousands of dollars that are being spent on the Vari Hall renovations could be better utilized to make classrooms more accessible, enhance the library, or improve existing space.

Students need to unite and call upon York University Administration to protect student space. Send a message to the President and Vice President Students of the university and ask them to keep Vari Hall the way it is-open and accessible.

Dear President Shoukri / Vice President Tiffin,

I am a York University student who believes strongly that the Vari Hall space should not be renovated and needs to be maintained as real student space.

The proposed renovations in Vari Hall will limit the activity of students on our campus in a space that was created for students.  By implementing such recommendations we will be ignoring many accessibility issues that our province is committed to dealing with and that students feel is a priority.

It is increasingly difficult for differently abled students to access spaces within our university as it is. Instead of allocating funds to renovate Vari Hall our university needs to be allocating funds to make our classrooms and campus more accessible.

Students use Vari Hall to increase their campus life participation. By taking such a space away we are limiting students’ freedom of speech and right to organize. The majority of active students on this campus use Vari Hall productively in order to organize, get involved, and further their experience on this campus. These renovations are not a reflection of what this campus wants at this time.

We believe that the York University Administration should protect student space by committing to keeping  Vari Hall the way it is.

I call upon the York University Administration to ensure that student space is a priority and to work with student representatives to protect Vari Hall and to ensure that it continues to be open and accessible student space.
