YFS Tax Support Clinic

Every year, the York Federation of Students hosts a FREE Tax Clinic because we know that tax season can be stressful and nerve-wracking. Taxes can be overwhelming for many students, from the confusing and tedious steps to the expenses. We are happy to provide students with support in filing their tax returns.

Stay tuned for the 2026 Tax Clinic details.

Want to volunteer with the YFS Tax Clinic for Winter 2026? See our FAQ below!

  • The YFS Tax Clinic 2026 will operate from March 2nd, 2026 to March 27th, 2026. Volunteers will provide assistance in tax filings during this time, from 11 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

  • As a CVITP tax volunteer, your role is to help individuals with modest incomes and simple tax situations file their income tax returns accurately and confidentially. Your duties include preparing tax returns, answering basic tax questions, and ensuring client information remains secure.

You’ll receive free online training from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), which covers tax software, eligibility rules, and privacy guidelines before you begin volunteering. During the tax season, the YFS Tax Coordinator will constantly be available to provide any support required in the tax filing process.

  • The criteria to be eligible to volunteer with the YFS Tax Clinic are as follows:

    • Must be a current undergraduate student of York University.

    • Must be open to acquiring a Police Records Check

    • Must have paid taxes in Canada within the last three (3) years

  • Yes, international students who meet the above qualifications are also eligible to volunteer.

  • The YFS will only be accepting applications from current York University undergraduate students. However, the Canadian Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) runs several tax clinics across the Greater Toronto Area, and we suggest you apply to these alternatives if you do not meet the YFS eligibility.

  • Any tax clinic volunteer that registers with the YFS will be eligible for the $300 honorarium, upon completion of 15+ hours of volunteering with the clinic. Volunteer hours assigned may vary depending on individual availability. Volunteers with greater availability are more likely to receive their preferred number of hours.
